The 2022-2023 Serie A championship opened on August 14, 2022. The first match for the Giallorossi was held away from home against SalernitanaRoma won the first three points even though the opponents never gave up all the way. Roma won by Cristante's goal in the 33rd. Within the first few minutes we saw an aggressive Roma with Zaniolo shooting on goal, but it was blocked by Sepe. Roma took another shot on a free kick by Dybala who passed the ball to Zaniolo who kicked it but it ended up high over the net. It was not one of the most dynamic matches played so far. In fact, both teams managed the field fairly well. In the 33rd Cristante scored for Roma's lead, which ended up being the final result of the match.

Roma's second league game was at home against Cremonese. It was the second consecutive win for the Giallorossi 1-0. From the very beginning of this match, as early as the third minute, Roma took a lot of chances, and they were very close to the goal. After endless minutes of attacks by both teams, Roma took the lead thanks to Chris Smalling in the 67th minute. The Englishman managed to score with a header that was pulled in from a corner kick by captain Lorenzo Pellegrini.

The first draw of the year came for Roma in the third league match against Juventus away from home, 1-1. Juventus started ahead during the first half with a goal by Vlahovic. Despite this point, Rui Patricio gave strength to his team from the goal. During the game Mourinho changed the register and switched to a 4-man defense changing literally everything in the game. From a Pellegrini's corner, Abraham managed to save the team from defeat and at least equalize the match. After this match, Roma was first in the standings with 7 points.

The fourth day of the championship was held against Monza, at home. Roma beat Monza 3-0 with a double by Paulo Dybala and then a third goal by Ibanez. This was an important match for a few reasons. Firstly, it was the debut of the new striker “Gallo” Belotti. Secondly and it was the first two goals for Paulo Dybala in a Giallorossi jersey. Thirdly, in only 90 minutes, the Special One lost two players, El Shaarawy and Kumbulla, both due to injury. After this victory, however, Roma moved to the top of the Serie A standings after four days of the championship. Despite this, the fifth day of the championship can be considered a disaster for Roma. Roma fell short in Udine 4-0. Roma did everything wrong, and Udinese had an excellent performance. The first two goals were just mistakes by Karsdorp and Rui Patricio of the Giallorossi. The only one who consistently really tried to overturn was Dybala. After this game, it was clear what was not working for the team, and Mourinho learned from his mistakes. With the sixth league game, Roma returned to smiles after the away win against Empoli, by winning 2-1 in Tuscany. From the start of the game, Roma gave excellent performances. Dybala immediately hit a post and then took the lead with a marvelous left footed shot. Then, the Empoli equalized with Bandinelli and in the second half, Roma took the lead again with Abraham. There was a penalty for Pellegrini who missed a shot and hit the crossbar.

On the seventh day of the championship, the Roma-Atalanta match, finished 0-1. The match was decided in the 35th minute by Scalvini's goal, even though there were numerous chances for Abraham, Shomurodov and all the Giallorossi to succeed. Due to this defeat, Roma remains with an unchanged score of 13 points and relegates to the sixth position in the table.
